Bijou is meant to be moved around and used wherever you want, so you don't need wood chips. Wood chips would be a fine option if you leave it there and don't want to deal with the grass.

We put ours on the grass, and it's pretty easy to mow around since the legs can move easily (there are ground stakes that you should use)
